Jenn & Andrew live in Tasmania, Australia.
Jenn is a scientist, and has been off to Henderson Island in the Pitcairn Island group on a research expedition with her team of marine scientists, botanists and ecologist for 3 months. She left to this extremely remote island at the end of May and was scheduled to meet up with Andrew in Papeete on August 28th; it would have been the first time they see each in three months and they were getting married 4 days later. How romantic!
During that time when Jenn was on the research trip, she would only have access to a sat phone for about 10 minutes a week to talk to Andrew and discuss the détails of the wedding in Moorea… that is, when they could hear each other over the phone! With no power, no water, no nothing on Henderson Island, communication was made super difficult.
So, when the boat that was to collect the team and take them from Henderson Island to Papeete broke down on its way to Pitcairn early of August, and returned to New Zealand… we started wondering:
Will Jenn Make It To Her Own Wedding in Moorea?
To be on the safe side, we re-scheduled the wedding which was initially booked on September 1st and postponed it to the 3d. While Jenn and Andrew were spending another week in the islands past that date, Andrew’s parents who made it to be present at the Wedding in Moorea, were flying back to Australia the night of September 3rd.
The rings were engraved with the initially planned wedding date but hey… that makes for a good story to tell!
The revised timetable for the Henderson Island ship advised that Jenn and her team would arrive to Mangareva (in the Gambier Islands, one of the 5 archipelagoes in French Polynesia) right in time for the weekly flight to Papeete… yeah, because nothing is as easy so there is just one flight a week from Mangareva to Papeete. That meant that until the very last minute we wouldn’t know if they made it to the flight!
On a side note, Mangareva is a lovely island to explore during a week… just not this time! 🙂
Andrew arrived with his parents in Tahiti on August 28th, and settled in the vacation rental villa they had booked in Moorea the next day. On September 1st, he went back to the airport in Tahiti to wait anxiously for Jenn… for some reason the flight got delayed and they kept us in suspense for an extra 2 hours!
But they made it!
What a relief it was! Of course it was now too late to catch the last ferry back to Moorea so they had to settle for the night in Tahiti.
Jenn & Andrew made it to their stunning villa in Moorea the next day, a well-deserved vacation for Jenn after over three months of camping on Henderson Island… will tell you about the wedding in Moorea in a future post!
